Some editing you do in post-processing - outside of Aperture or Lightroom - can benefit from converting the image to 16-bit TIFF first, as that will give you smoother gradients, for one, and whatever heavy work you do on the image can benefit from that. As long as your jpeg is close to what the file will look like for your output, you're good to go. I find that when only minor tweaks are necessary to an image file, you gain little extra from choosing TIFF rather than Jpeg, and when I save digital paintings and scans, I have made comparisons between TIFF and jpeg and found that the pixels are uncannily close to identical. The images from my Finepix F30 I import in jpeg, of course, as I don't have another in-camera option, but I still find that I can edit them rather heavily without getting artifacts, and I suppose that Aperture should be no different in that respect.
